Celebration of Black History Month

Amir Pinnix (Football), Jay Thomas (Football), Mike Sherels (Football), Josh Robertson (Football), Adam Weber (Football), Neel Allen (Football), Maggie Souba (Women’s Hockey), Alex Daniels (Football), and Dagney Willey (Women’s Hockey) spoke at Maxfield Elementary in St. Paul on February 20th and 21st to announce the winners of the Black History Month Essay Contest. The children wrote essays on one of four African-Americans who have had a positive impact on the state of Minnesota. The four individuals that were chosen to write about were William “Corky” Finney (former St. Paul Police Chief), Sharon Sayles Belton (former Mayor of Minneapolis), Briana Scurry (Olympian Soccer Player), and David Winfield (Major League Baseball Player). Student-athletes visited the school to collect the essays on February 21st and then selected one essay winner from each class. They returned to the school to announce the winners the following day. The winners were then invited to attend either a men’s or women’s basketball game with three other members of their family and to be recognized at the game for their accomplishment.
