McNamara Student-Athlete of the Week: Hassan Mead

Hassan MeadEach week, the McNamara Academic Center for Student-Athletes (MAC) will recognize one University of Minnesota student-athlete for his or her academic achievements. The winner of the McNamara Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending April 25th is Hassan Mead from the men’s cross country team.

Coach Steve Plasencia believes that Hassan knows how important education is for his future. “Hassan Mead has shown maturity and strong effort during his first year here in all areas necessary to be a successful as a student-athlete,” Plasencia said. “He goes above and beyond to make sure he is fulfilling all the requests from his instructors, academic counselors, and coaches.”

Mead is a freshman who plans on majoring in kinesiology.

Academic Counselor Robert Simon knows that Mead’s hard work has been noticed by a lot of different entities on campus.

“Hassan’s successful transition onto campus has not only impressed me, but coaches and administrators as well,” Simon said. “Even more inspiring, his work ethic and commitment to academics are of the same level of excellence that he demonstrates on the track. He truly is a model student-athlete.”

Learning Specialist Todd Helmer says, “Hassan has put tremendous effort into his classes and exemplifies the student-athlete. Last semester, he attained above a 3.0. This is especially impressive because he was born in Somalia and is not a native English speaker.”
